Angel Arutsothy
a multidisciplinary creative based in Toronto — the city of wandering spirits & infinite backdrops. My practice moves across photography, mixed media, and storytelling, with a focus on identity, memory, and the ways images can hold feeling.
I’ve always been drawn to seeing the world with a sense of curiosity and possibility. In many ways, I grew up like Alice in Wonderland — fascinated by the idea that there is always more beneath the surface, and that the ordinary can become something unexpected when you look at it differently.
That same curiosity has always extended into making. I was the child who was constantly drawing, crafting, collecting, and transforming whatever was around me — a little Tinker Bell in spirit, always wanting to create something with my hands. That instinct to make, experiment, and reimagine continues to shape my practice today.
Photography was where I began, but my practice has since grown beyond the camera. Today, I work with image, texture, objects, sound, and storytelling to build worlds that sit somewhere between the familiar and the imagined.
At the heart of it all, I create to connect — to moments, to memory, and to people. I’m drawn to the quiet and in-between moments, and to creating work that makes someone feel seen, held, or a little less alone. I believe art can be a form of care: a way to witness and be witnessed, and to remind us that our stories are worth holding onto. Ultimately, I hope to make something honest, human, and meaningful.
